Esalen Institute

This week, I welcome my guest, Brita Ostrom, Massage School Director of the Esalen Institute from Big Sur, California.

Why should prospective students of massage choose your massage school to train as a massage therapist?

Esalen Massage focuses first on quality of touch and connection between the giver and the receiver. The practitioner brings a sense of presence to the session. Many students say they are glad they started here first, and then went on to many advanced trainings.

What type of massage therapy do you teach at your massage school, and can you give a brief definition and background on this particular type of massage technique?

Esalen Massage was developed in the Esalen Hot springs, and combines Swedish Massage with Sensory awareness, psychological atunement, and Asian flow.

What makes your massage school different than the rest?

We focus on quality of touch and personal growth of the practitioner, so that he/she might inspire that in others. Our month long trainings also bring health and wellness to the foreground. Our meals feature fresh-grown produce, our hot springs are renown, and our natural setting bring a sense of ease.

How long is your program and what kind of commitment is required?

Our basic 150-hour program requires a 28-day commitment in residence at Esalen Institute and other centers such as Hollyhock. The cost is approximately $5,000 all-inclusive. We also have add-on certifications of 250 hours and 500 hours.

What educational prerequisite is required for admittance to your massage school

Admittance is by application regarding life experience and personal references.

Do students have a choice about the types of massage they wish to learn at your massage school, and do you also teach other holistic practices?

Esalen Institute offers many other types of bodywork training: Cranio-sacral, Breema, Thai Massage, Table Shiatsu, Deep Tissue, somatic practices and more.

And finally, in your opinion, what makes a good massage therapist or massage practitioner

A good massage therapist knows how to listen to his/her partner’s body and to respond appropriately. He/she does their own personal work and has clear boundaries. Finally, a good practitioner has good bodywork skills.

Thank you, Brita.
