Manual Lymph DrainageWhether you are a prospective student of massage, or someone who just wants to know more about Manual Lymph Drainage, my guest, Michaela Sparke Kvisth (from England, but living in Sweden) shares her experiences and knowledge about this effective massage technique. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) was developed by the Danish physiotherapist Dr Emil Vodder in the 1930’s. If you are interested in learning more about training as a Manual Lymph Drainage Therapist, see Dr. Vodder Manual Lymph Drainage School. Can you briefly explain the type of massage you practice and why someone might choose to try this particular massage technique? The main type of massage that I practice is Dr. Vodder Manual Lymph Drainage. This type of massage is given in combination with other therapies as part of a management plan for the treatment of lymphoedema. It can also be used for various other disorders such as sinusitis, Down syndrome, sports injuries, multiple sclerosis, stroke with hemiplegia, stress, chronic fatigue, chronic bronchitis, burn injuries, venous stasis leg ulcer, arthritis, tinnitus, whiplash, migraine, bells palsy, and detached retina. The effects of Manual Lymph Drainage are numerous: it effects the nervous system; smooth muscle; it may have an effect on your immune system, although not proven; it drains excess fluid out of the loose connective tissue; and helps reduce pain. It is a skin technique only, and small repetitive circular movements are performed by the therapist. The massage treatment itself is incredibly relaxing and allows the patient to completely switch off. In your opinion, what makes a good massage therapist or massage practitioner?A good massage therapist should always take a thorough medical, physical and family history of their patient. S/he should always listen to the patient and be eager to help, but at the same time recognize their limitations. S/he should work ideally as part of a multi- disciplinary team. What is your philosophy on health and healing?I think that it is very important to find the right treatment that suits you. Don´t be afraid to admit when something isn’t helping. Always have a holistic approach to health and healing. Can you share with us one really significant transformation you witnessed as a result of the work you do?During my training in Austria we witnessed the amazing effects that Manual Lymph Drainage can have on patients with lymphoedoma. It reduced the swelling tremendously and improved the quality of life for those patients. Why did you choose the profession of Massage Therapy as a career? As I am already a Registered Nurse, I felt it would complement to my qualification. Thank you, Michaela.
