Do you have to be physically strong to be a good massage therapist? Some might suggest that you need to be, but I think that you just need to keep yourself healthy and really look after yourself. The key to practicing any form of bodywork and to avoid self-injury, is mostly in the use of proper body mechanics. You need to learn how to use the weight of your body rather than rely on muscle strength. Anyone can hurt themselves if they over use their muscles/tendons. You need to learn how to stand correctly; how to lean rather than solely relying on your upper body strength; and how to use your hands correctly to avoid getting carpal tunnel syndrome. Because you are going to be in the business of helping people feel better and helping to improve their health and wellness, any massage training ought to include self-care as part of the curriculum. Like anything, the better you feel the better job you will do.
