Why are there so many different types of massage practices?

Why are there so many different types of massage practices? It's kind of confusing for the average person trying to sort out what type of massage will be most suitable for their specific needs and condition. I hope to elaborate on some of these approaches over the next little while. I have personally had both good and bad experiences with a number of approaches, and I have my own preferences and biases based on my history and experiences. A good way to know if a certain modality is right for you is to interview some therapists before you make that decision. One important thing to remember is to trust your gut reactions. You have to feel comfortable and at ease with your therapist.

Essentially, the method you choose ought to address the reason you sought out massage in the first place. If you have injured yourself playing soccer, for example, you might first try a massage therapist who specializes in sports therapy and has had experience treating your specific condition. This doesn't imply that other methods won't work, but you might have better results with someone who has worked with your type of injury before.
